Our Plant to Plate team had a great morning with students from room 3 at Cloverlea School.
Even though the rain cut our gardening short, we managed to plant out some vegetable seedlings kindly donated from our friends at Awapuni Nurseries. Beetroot, Cabbage, Broccoli, Bok Choy and lots of other goodies went into the soil after we feed it. We remember how to feed the soil because its like making a cake! Cocoa = compost, Icing sugar = Lime, Sprinkles = General fertiliser and my favourite, Chocolate Chips = Sheep poo. When the rain started we ducked for cover and made wheat head people. I wonder how their hair is growing and whether they have had hair cuts yet?
Lunch was cooked by some very clever year 5 & 6 and I was happy to see everyone giving new things a go. I hope the new recipes have been tried at home!
Thanks for letting us spend the morning with you room 3! Happy gardening everyone, Jacinda.
GARDENING TIP OF THE DAY…
Potatoes are an easy vegetable for beginners and they are a fantastic first crop in new soil as the roots and tubers break it up and make it easier to dig in the future. July/August is a good time to start sprouting your potatoes ready for planting in September. It’s a great activity for kids to do!
